MACRO
My interest in macro photography began by chance, when I discovered the work of Simon Booth. His name kept coming up among my photography friends, so I signed up for a Lake District based workshop he was running and joined a small group in late May 2026. A class size of only three meant that Simon could tailor the session to our individual interests and skill levels. As a complete novice to macro, I was thrilled to learn directly from an expert in the field. I left feeling energised and more confident with my macro lenses, armed with fresh ideas and practical techniques I could use straight away.
Simon taught two main approaches: a tripod-based method and a handheld technique that brings the camera close to the ground. It was the latter approach that resonated with me. The handheld method produced images that felt closer to my own style of photography: soft, painterly, and impressionistic and have a dreamlike quality to them echoing the look of my ICM and multiple-exposure work.
